North Lanarkshire : Music Comprehensive Pilot
ST AMBROSE HIGH SCHOOL
What is this?
This project piloted an inclusive music comprehensive, involving a high school in the authority - St Ambrose High School Coatbridge. The pilot looked at new ways of using participation in music to improve ethos and attainment; to build self-esteem; to offer a pathway to future education in music related skills by linking with an FE college; and to promote social inclusion by integrating more music within the school curriculum and encouraging more involvement out of school hours.
FLaT involvement?
FLaT support was provided to explore diversity and flexibility in the curriculum in the pilot school and more generally to support the Executive's wider priorities of social and educational inclusion and citizenship.

Project aims?
- to provide inclusive centres for the learning and teaching of music and provide support for community music programmes.
- to develop the pilot school as a key player in the provision of opportunities in music and technology in the 'pop and rock ' genre.
- To adopt a broad-based view of music education to support individuals and schools in the development of self-esteem, motivation and raised attainment and achievement levels.
Project outcomes?
- Increased participation in music by young people in the authority area.
- Increased learner achievement, attainment, confidence and self-esteem.
- An enriched music curriculum through enhanced music provision and opportunities.
- Made a contribution to narrowing the gap between higher and lower levels of attainment and the wider regeneration of the area.
Timescale?
The project started in October 2003 and was concluded in June 2006.
Level of Support?
FLaT support was a grant of £40,000, plus evaluation costs.
