East Renfrewshire: Arts at the Heart
What is this?
Arts at the Heart is a partnership between pupils, parents, staff, artists and architects to artistically improve the interior and exterior design of a new primary school being built during 2005 and 2006. The education authority will partner the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation to develop the first MUS-e project in Scotland that builds partnerships across Europe.
FLaT involvement?
FLaT support is provided to create a new method of creativity within schools that will have an impact on teaching and learning of all pupils within the primary school involved.

Project aims?
- To create a partnership between pupils, parents, teachers, artists and architects to artistically improve the interior and exterior design of Carlibar Primary School
- To put in place a creative collaboration to extend beyond the building and development stage and lay the foundations for a truly creative learning environment
- A school will be established where the arts in the widest context are firmly established at the heart of education and through which other schools will become involved
- With arts being at the heart it will impact on pupils learning as a vehicle for engagement and will do much for the self-esteem of the community
- Becoming a partner with the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation to develop a MUS-e project which will have partners through Europe, but presently no partners in Scotland
- To build on the existing good practice on instrumental tuition and the use of the Kodaly programme within the Council
Project outcomes?
- Pupils will be more expressive and make creative contribution to school environment
- Pupils will have their creativity fostered and encouraged
- Pupils will have an understanding of building design and the work of architects
- Parents will be engaged in their community and environment and contribute creatively to their children's school
- Teachers and support staff will be able to understand and work with artists to develop more creative and sympathetic teaching style
- The wider community will be able to provide a more aesthetically pleasing school structure thereby increasing pride in ownership of the building
- A fundamental philosophy of the MUS-e programme is to bring about a change in the attitudes of the whole community in terms of mutual tolerance and understanding
- Good practice will be disseminated
Timescale?
The project started in January 2005 and will conclude in August 2006.
Level of Support?
FLaT support is a grant of £82,850, plus costs of external evaluation.
