Angus : ICT in Science Project

MONIFIETH HIGH SCHOOL

What is this?

This project piloted new ways of learning and teaching in Science subjects through the development of a wireless Local Area Network (LAN), digital projectors and trolleys of laptops which allowed more flexible and tailored use and deployment of school ICT resources. The project also explored thinking skills, creativity, critical skills, education for work and school to further/higher education transitions, and developed its own model for related in-house and externally provided continuing professional development.

FLaT involvement?

FLaT support was provided to explore new ways of applying next-generation ICT to learning and teaching across the school's science curriculum, and the links to other aspects of the proposal such as thinking skills, creativity in education and the school's education for work programme.

Project aims?

  • To develop innovative learning and teaching approaches in the Sciences, within the context of the 'Year of Science', which will maximise the effectiveness of next-generation ICT.
  • To increase pupil involvement/responsibility for own learning and provide more varied learning contexts.
  • To explore more flexible use and deployment of school ICT resources.

Project outcomes?

  • Enhance learning for 1100 pupils (first-sixth year) in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Science.
  • Increase student responsibility for learning and development of thinking skills.
  • Improve ICT skills, including research and information handling.
  • Increase contact with world of work and further/higher education.
  • Raise attainment and achievement levels in Science subjects through developing more motivated learners and a more challenging learning experience through next generation ICT.

Timescale?

The project was started in June 2002 and was completed in June 2003.

Level of Support?

FLaT support was a grant of £62,500 plus evaluation costs.
